Two Teacher School - Joining before the problem helps secure victory.

A teacher, recognizing that his contract had strange conditions regarding termination, contacted the union and decided to join. The contract stated that those who quit their contracts mid term give up their monthly salary and agree to work for 1,000yen per hour. The union believes that this is not only illegal, but does not achieve the goal of keeping teachers, it only encourages them to quit with little notice.

 

At that point the member had no intention of quitting early but realized that an employer who could conceive such a contract clause is not a good employer. When the member found a new job he was able to give us the details quickly and we were able to watch his employment situation (the member gave 40 days notice).

 

When his pay was cut, the union was able to move quickly and resolve the problem. The biggest victory of all is that the employer has now agreed to remove this clause from future contracts, and has agreed to enroll all new teachers onto unemployment insurance.
