Who's interested in quality education and better working conditions at NOVA?

Since the founding of the General Union in 1991 our union has been involved with NOVA teachers. Since that time we have won...

 Paid flexible holidays for full time and part time teachers.
 The end to full day fines for lateness.
 Enrollment in unemployment insurance.
 A grievance procedure to deal with individual concerns and problems.
 Withdrawal of unfair dismissals, payment of workers’ compensation claims, thirty days dismissal notice.

BUT IS THIS ENOUGH? NO!!

Are you satisfied with the quality of education you can provide your students?

Over the years the General Union has regularly demanded an increase in preparation time and a lessening of lessons to give teachers time to prepare higher quality for their students.

NOVA’s answer: We are a business. Without a blink of an eye, NOVA has stated that the three days training is enough preparation to have teachers work eight lessons per day.

Did you know that you can be dismissed or disciplined for meeting with students?

The union has continuously demanded that NOVA remove this clause in the teachers’ contracts and has sponsored a case at the Osaka Bar Association Human Rights Commission which ruled that this clause clearly violates workers’ rights. A court would probably reach the same conclusion.

NOVA’s answer: We don’t care.

Has NOVA ever given you direction in what to do in case of accidents to teachers or students, especially children?

The union has asked that NOVA clarify procedures to protect children studying at NOVA and have asked NOVA to clarify the teachers’ liability in case of accident.

NOVA’s answer: No answer, except to tell the union that they have proper liability coverage for teachers while in the same breath refusing to allow the union to see the insurance policy.

Do you know that over the years that General Union and individual union members have fought tirelessly against dismissal based on unsubstantiated student ‘complaints’?

If you’ve been dismissed or non-renewed, especially after numerous contract renewals, you can fight the dismissal and may have a strong chance of reversing it. If you’ve been unfairly dismissed or disciplined, please contact the union for a consultation.

NOVA’s answer: They have no obligation to provide teachers or the union with accurate details leading to the dismissal or discipline.

Did you know that NOVA has resisted enrolling teachers into health and pension insurance for many years?

Nova resisted unemployment insurance for a long time, but the General Union first won full enrollment into unemployment insurance, and has now demanded that teachers receive the proper, socially acceptable health and pension insurance.
NOVA’s answer: They enrolled a small group of teachers while changing contracts, both current and new, to push teachers under thirty hours per week to evade giving teachers proper insurance.

Did you know that you can change NOVA? How?
1. Join the union and resist negative changes and fight for improvements.
2. Call and ask to speak to the NOVA president, Mr Sahashi Nozomu, or Anders Lundqvist, Director of Education directly. NOVA head office can be reached by telephone at 06-6213-2450, by fax 06-6213-4900 or email at novax_osk@nova.ne.jp.
