Nichibei English Service Teachers! Did You Know?

For detailed information on the holiday system at Nichibei, Click here for 'Happy Holidays'

* The union has won you 10 days' paid holiday after working at Nichibei English Service for 6 months full time. These days can be taken together or separately at times of your choosing. We urge all employees to take their holidays. It's your right.

* After working for 1 and a half years, you are entitled to a new batch of 11 paid holidays. It goes up every year after that - to 12, then 14, 16, 18, and then 20 every year.

* Unused paid holidays from one year can be carried over to the next year.

* These paid holidays are over and above the national holidays and holiday periods fixed by the company (e.g. the New Year holidays).

* Part-timers are also entitled to a number of paid holidays per year.

This chart should help you work out what you're entitled to:

No. of days worked per week / year Years Worked 0.5 1.5 2.5 3.5 4.5 5.5 6.5 5 days or 30 hrs/wk 10 11 12 14 16 18 20 4 days or 169 to 216 days 7 8 9 10 12 13 15 3 days or 121-168 days 5 6 6 7 9 10 11 2 days or 73-120 days 3 4 4 5 6 6 7 1 day or 48-72 days 1 2 2 2 3 3 3

* Nichibei has working regulations in which all this is laid out very Japanese. The company has claimed to the union in collective bargaining that they explain this all very clearly to employees at the time of hiring. Some teachers have told us otherwise. We want to hear from you! Join the union and be sure to get the correct number of holidays!

* The union has requested that the working regulations be translated into English, in line with Nichibei's legal duty to 'make the working regulations understandable to employees'. Nichibei is still refusing, even though they claim the right to discipline foreign teachers under those same rules.
